When I started writing ACID, I found myself doing something I've never done before – making a soundtrack for it (you can read my post about it over at the Lucky 13s blog here). And now I've ended up doing the same thing for my WIP, AKA the book that I now have a deadline to get the first draft done by, which is exciting and scary at the same time as I've never had a deadline for a first draft before! Anyway, to get myself into the writing zone while I get this draft done, I'm listening to its soundtrack pretty much exclusively. As the world of ACID is futuristic and high-tech, the soundtrack included a lot of electronic music; in contrast, the world of my WIP is much lower tech, so the songs I've chosen for it are quieter, with a strong leaning towards acoustic and classical music. There's some heavier stuff in there too, though – in fact, Many of Horror might now be my favourite song ever.
Ludovico Einaudi - I Due Fiumi
Mumford & Sons - I Gave You All
Erik Satie - 3 Gnossienes - #1. Lent
Mumford & Sons - Awake My Soul
Message To Bears - Running Through Woodland
Temper Trap - Soldier On
Fleet Foxes - Tiger Mountain Peasant Song
Ludovico Einaudi - La Nascita Delle Cose Segrete

In other news, ACID is up on Amazon! With an ISBN and a release date and everything! Woo-hoo!
There's nothing much else to see at the moment (no cover yet, sorry!), but if you want to check it out (and maybe *cough* add it to your wishlist/preorder *cough*) it's here.

So, how about you? Which song or songs best sum up what you're working on at the moment? Share them with me in the comments!
Bernard Herrmann Score for Farenheit 451 OST
ReplyDeleteJohn Willimas score for Jaws collectors Edition OST
Jerry Goldsmith score for Freud OST on a loop more or less....
Thanks, Ian (and thanks for letting me know who you were on Twitter!)! I love John Williams scores - might have to look a few up for the next book.
DeleteNice playlist Emma. Might give WIP 2 one myself...
ReplyDeleteDoes that sound rude? It isn't. Stupid Carry Ons, making everything sound saucy.
DeleteBahaha! It didn't, until you said… Damn those Carry Ons. :D
DeleteI love Biffy Clyro, and that album in particular. Most of my WIP music is stuff like Tom Waits, Jane's Addiction and early days REM. Probably not for everyone...
ReplyDeleteYay, another Biffy fan! It's an amazing album, isn't it? Not a bad song on it. :)
DeleteOoh, I haven't heard a lot of these. Will enjoy testing them out later! I always need more inspiring music.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Megan! Have fun!
DeleteOoh, I know Paramore, Mumford, Fleet Foxes, but the rest are new to me. Thanks for sharing, Emma!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Elsie. Hope you like 'em!
DeleteOooh, some lovely tunes there, Em. At the moment I'm listening to an old fave of mine, Depeche Mode's: 'Violator', while working on the novel. It has techno, moody and bouncy moments, so is quite an interesting one to write too. Congrats about ACID being on Amazon - wooohooo! x
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm still smiling about it! x
DeleteI've never made a soundtrack for a WIP...but then again I'm not very musically inclined. How exciting your book is on Amazon! I'm heading over there now...
ReplyDeleteThank you, Demitria!
DeleteEmma I do exactly the same!!! In fact I had a little ramble about it a few months ago:
ReplyDeletehttp://sargentlefty.blogspot.ch/2012/04/music-writing-and-why-i-cant-write.html
I mostly listen to wordless music when actually writing (I would say 'classical' but most of the time it's movie soundtracks!) but I make playlist for when I'm editing/out walking/mulling things over in general.
Also something I have started to do is assign each character their own song as and when I discover it - Had a huge revelation about one character whilst listening to Muse...
:-)
PS Im almost as excited about your book as you are! Have even pre-ordered on amazon :-) Do you have a front cover yet? (not that I judge books by their covers of course!)
ReplyDeleteThat's really interesting about you assigning each character their own song - I might have to try that! And aaaaah, thank you for the pre-order! So, so appreciated. :) Cover coming sometime in the next few months, I hope - watch this space!
ReplyDeleteI highly suggest Radioactive by Imagine Dragons for ACID it's high-tech and electronic and it's very futuristic! :D
